Every pet owner wants their pet to live a healthy and happy life. Feeding table scraps to your pet can be a harmless act as long as you know which foods to avoid feeding your dog. Certain human foods can cause symptoms of pet toxicity, which can be scary and dangerous for your pet to experience. This list names the most common foods to avoid feeding your dog:
1. Onions and garlic
Easily one of the most recognizable foods to keep away from your dog is onions and, lesser-known, garlic. They contain a toxin known as N-propyl disulfide, which breaks down red blood cells and can cause anemia in dogs. Keep both raw and cooked onions away from your pet.
2. Avocado
One of the lesser-known harmful foods for dogs is avocado. Avocados have persin, which is a fungicidal toxin that can cause vomiting and diarrhea in your dog. While persin exists in every part of the avocado, the flesh is the least dangerous for your pet to eat. The skin of the avocado and the pit contain the most persin and can even be fatal to your dog.
3. Caffeinated beverages
Caffeine toxicity in pets can be dangerous. Not only does caffeine raise blood pressure and cause cardiac arrhythmia, but pets can also lose muscle control and have tremors or seizures. Caffeine is most common in beverages, though some medications have caffeine as an ingredient.
4. Grapes and raisins
While the method of toxicity is still unknown for grapes and raisins, there is significant evidence to show that grapes can cause toxicity in dogs. Grapes, and their counterpart raisins, can cause kidney injury or even failure. If you want to give your dog a fresh snack, consider a carrot instead.
5. Dairy products
Like human babies, puppies have an enzyme called Lactase in their bodies, which allows them to break down the sugars in their mother’s milk. As dogs mature, the amount of Lactase in their bodies naturally decreases and they become less capable of processing milk. While dairy products will not always cause an allergic reaction in your pet, dairy intolerance is common in many dogs. If your dog experiences vomiting or diarrhea after consuming dairy products, that is a sign to avoid giving it to them in the future. If their symptoms are more severe, contact your vet.
6. Chocolate
The most well known dangerous food for dogs is chocolate. While chocolate is not necessarily as fatal as people may think, the caffeine-like chemicals in chocolate can cause increased blood flow to the brain, which can be deadly for dogs if consumed in large amounts.
7. Peaches and plums
While the flesh of these fruits can cause an upset stomach, the sharp pits can be dangerous for your dog to ingest.
These are some of the most well-known foods to keep away from your dog. If your dog happens to ingest any of these food products, be sure to contact your vet to figure out what steps to take. There are plenty of foods that dogs can eat, such as fish, carrots, sweet potato, chicken, and rice. Finding what your pet loves is part of the fun!
